Airfix Thatched Cottage

The weather is a bit dodgy here today with temperatures at zero with snow flurries.  However this meant that my sons Rugby match in Settle was cancelled.

I used the time to do some painting on the French 5th Regiment however my painting  mojo was not there.

Before Christmas I had bought some old Airfix kits and I thought why not do a bit of gluing instead of painting.


The kit looks to have been made around  1978 so it is about 40 years old.


The kit was complete and looked nice and easy to do. Just the ticket for a Sunday afternoon. 20 minutes later and it was built.

    I had a couple of these cottages when I were nought but a lad.

    I don't recall what happened to them but I would be surprised if they re-appeared in a dusty box sometime.

      Hi Jim

      I built so many Airfix kits as a youngster. Most are long gone although I still have a fair tanks and vehicles for WW2 Western Desert from the 70s stashed away.

    Very good, it was only yesterday that I saw the model made up and in action and wondered who made it. I will dip back into some of those posts and see if I can find it again.

      Hi Norm

      Dapol now make the cottage as well other old Airfix buildings. The church and windmill are useful items.

    I've made a few of these over the years, and they can be easily changed by swapping the end walls round, or putting the windows in from the rear to make the frames flush.

      I have another thatched cottage kit to build and will try the alternate window option.

      What I should get next is a La Haye Sainte.

    A classic building I had a couple of these that appeared everywhere from the ECW to the ACW and WW2 .

    I'm very keen to see what you make of this, Mark, not least because my own example is in dire need of repainting!

    I believe I still have three of these as well as numerous other Airfix terrain pieces purchased during my introduction to miniature gaming in the early half of the 1970s

    20 minutes is pretty good going Mark! The Dapol version is probably easier to build as the plastic is slightly flexible.

      I have to confess I also have the Dapol kit in addition to the 2 Airfix ones. Is 3 Thatched cottages to many ?
