Polish Guard Lancers

Well it taken way longer to get these figures completed but they are finally done.

The trumpeter is a conversion and has a bionic arm donated by a plastic figure. I also use Newline figures for spare parts.

The uniforms are rather pretty and but they were time consuming to paint. I have another 6 figures which will be painted as Red Guard Lancers. I however I need a break ,and need to find something easier to do next.  Perhaps a squadron of Line Lancers or a unit of Prussian Dragoons.

Another point was trying to get the Lances all at the same angle. They would not look like Guard Lancers if they had their Lances all over the place would they.

I use my old trusty Funckens, with french text as my uniform guides.  I have had these since the 70s. I know people say they have inaccuracies but they inspired me as a youngster and continue to do today.

  1. I'm using my copy of the Funken books as a guide for my next group of cavalry as well. As you say, they were the inspiration for much of our painting as a youths so why not use them! Your lancers have turned out lovely. A real tour de force!

  2. More very nice work Mark. It’s fitting to use retro uniform books for a retro project and I always use the HH painting instructions even if they contain inaccuracies hence my Picton is wearing a red riding coat at Waterloo!

  3. Good unit Mark. I admire your ability to stay focussed even if it is only half a unit at a time.

Funcken is not all bad. I have all the important ones.

  4. They're lovely but the old Almark book, French Napoleonic Lance Regiments, showed the trumpeter on the cover with a red shabraque - which is right or are they both right (different periods or dress states)?

  5. Well done Mark, a beautiful unit, and like many others, Funcken (and Historex) was all we had in the early 70s for uniform info. Keep up the great work.

  8. An inspiring job Mark, well done. I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one still reaching for my well thumbed Funckens. My own unit of HH Red Lancers benefitted from those volumes back in the 70s. They weren't too hot on tartans as my Black Watch remain eternally gairish!!

  9. Just brilliant. I know exactly how hard these are to paint and you've done them magnificently. I love the trumpeter!
    Best regards

  10. Beautiful shiny toys Mark...
Your not the only one who still checks out the uniforms in the Funcken books.

    All the best. Aly
