I have started another 6 figure squadron but have decided to put them to one side and paint some British riflemen instead as they should be a lot easier to do.
I find that red takes at least 3 coats to get a hood finish but the finished results is pleasing.

Nothing quite like cavalry in red coats! They look great, and I can certainly relate to your observation about things taking far longer than one might anticipate. Happy New Year!

I think it takes me longer to paint these figures with neat lines and black lining than when I used to do washes and multiple highlighting.

I am using a Newline trumpeter and officer in the next batch.
Nice job and they look clean castings, not always the case with that figure.

These look very good and I agree painting British in the 18th century always seems to take a long time!

Lovely finish on the troop Mark. Ive found that using a dark brown undercoat with red helps make them stand out, but to be honest there's nothing wrong with the finish you have done on these chaps. Well done.
They are not originals so I guess it all depends on the quality of the original.

I used Vallejo Scarlet. In fact I think I did 4 coats on these lads.

Napoleonic British take longer than other nations. Although the French come a close second.

I might try the brown undercoat to see if this helps. I guess that red paint, and also yellow, may have less pigment as they are more expensive than other colours.
With results like these it has to be worth it - my painting speed is glacial but I'm never happy to stop if I feel I can make 'em a bit better. I look forward to seeing the rest of the unit. Perhaps you need to set up a game to give yourself a deadline with a pay-off, I know it works for me - sometimes..
