Hinton Hunt Grenadiers and Partizan

The weekend started well when on Saturday morning the postman delivered a small parcel from John C.

Inside where a dozen each of French Old Guard and Hungarian Grenadiers firing.  I had been short of these figures to make up my 24 figure units.

The JC figures are seen here posing next to a couple of my original figures still wearing my rather poor 70s paint job.

On Sunday I ventured down to Partizan and the Newark showground. This the second time I have visited the new location since it moved from Kelham Hall.

The standard of the demo and participation games was exceptional and with the trade and airy location this is now the best show of the year.

Being rather attracted to things old I rather liked the simplicity of this game using flats from Tony Bath and Peter Guylers collection. The battle of Trimsos from Featherstones book War Games.

There were so many other games on show but I was also taken with this game using Command and Colours Napoleonics.

On the purchasing front I picked up some SHQ Prussian and British 6lb artillery to go with my Napoleonics. The SHQ models are seen here with some HH Prussians.

I also bought a few books. Firstly a couple of Summerfield books on the Prussian Army. These are as new and cost a less than a third of the original price.

I also bought a book on Wellingtons campaign in Southern France for less than a price of a Wargame Magazine. This is a campaign that I know very little about.

I was also particularly pleased to get a new copy of Skrine book Fontenoy on the War of the Austrian. This is Terry Wise produced facsimile and is book 152 of a limited run of 250.  This I got for a fiver.

Battleground Show

Today I travelled a few miles up North to go to the Battleground show. Its been a couple years since I visited this show. I had a good day out and my son Max was able to play a couple of 'boutigue' participation games.

He particularly enjoyed playing something called Wild West Exodus. He bought a box a figures and has stuck one together. He wants to paint it tomorrow.

We arrived at opening time and within a few minutes I had bought a nice selection of classic Napoleonic books as well a copy of Dettingen from a bookseller for £3 each.

At the table top sale I had hoped to find an Airfix La Haye Sainte and whilst I did not find one I did get these 3 Airfix kits for £7.

I explained to the sellar I was going to use them with my Hinton Hunts.  He replied that there were a couple in his group who also collected Hintons.

I wondered over to the Lancaster Cellarman game to find out more.  Their game was in classic style using Spencer Smith figures.

I had a good chat with the group who meet up every so often in Lancaster and it transpires that one member has 2000 original Hintons and another has 1000  figures.  I hope to be able to join in one of thier games in the future.

A good day out.

Battleground Show

Hi

Spent a very enjoyable day out at the Battleground Show this weekend.  The new venue is very good with easy access    made simpler with clear directions including photos showing the route to the show. There was plenty of parking available.

Once inside the show was well laid out with good lighting which made for better photos than many other sport hall venues.

There were plenty of traders and a good selection of both demo and participation games on offer. My son Max played Witchfinder General no less than 3 times.

It was also a pleasure to meet up with fellow AMGers Graham, Robbie, Colin, Dave and Andy.  There were 4 games that caught my eye.

For my first photo here is a rather nice Frederick the Great vignette painted by Dave Jarvies.

Firstly my favourite game, not surprisingly as it was Old School, was the one put on by the Lancaster Cellarmen and used Spencer Smith, RSM and few Holger Erikkson figures to recreate the classic look.

Robbie and the rest of the Indpendent Wargamers put on a colourful Italian Wars game using Black Powder Pike and Shot rules.

After the colour of the Italian Wars there was the slightly more drab, except the French that is, of this interesting game put on by the Tyneside Wargames club with their grand scale representation of the covering France and Belgium in 1914.

The rules used where home grown and used 10mm figures.

And finally a Napoleonic game in 54mm
